Personal Commission
The Most ReverendGarland F. Byers, Jr., J.D., D.D.
Bishop to the Nations, under Apostolic Commission

“…If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”Luke 9:23 (KJV)
It is a common practice for churches and individual bishops, as well as secular organizations, to set forth what the secular world calls a “mission statement.” I believe this practice to be both informative and helpful. However, in a ministerial setting, I believe that it is more appropriately referred to as a Personal Commission Statement. The spreading of the gospel and the work of the Kingdom of Heaven are much different than in a for-profit business or even in a non-profit business in the secular world. While we adopt some secular practices in the church out of convenience, some things should be set apart and be, therefore, holy.
I will now set forth what I see as my own calling in the service of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Before undertaking this, I state plainly, boldly, and unapologetically, that I believe in Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God the Father in heaven,1 and in the Holy Spirit, which was sent to us by Jesus Christ upon His ascension to the right hand of God.2 I belong to Jesus. He is the Lord of my life. He is my Master, and Him alone do I serve.3 I reject Satan and all of his works,4 and I give glory and honor and praise to the Most High God through His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.5
Personal Commission
Statement
To the Church, the Body of Christ, in diaspora6 among the ten kingdoms7:
1.I am a bishop in Apostolic Succession, consecrated by the laying on of hands8 in lines documented and unbroken, bishop by bishop,9 to four of the original twelve apostles, to the Apostle Paul, and to five of the seventy apostles personally sent forth from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,10 with every line set out for public inspection on this website.
2.In addition to holding the Office of Bishop in the Church of Jesus Christ,11 I am called and anointed as a Scribe of the Kingdom of Heaven, of which Jesus spoke of in the scriptures.12 I have a particular calling to write doctrine for the Christian faithful, as opposed to pastoring a church, or engaging in other ministerial activities, anointings which are held by others.13
3.In fulfilling the Office of Bishop, I exercise the Office of the Keys, as that office was given by our Lord to His apostles and to their successors.14
4.I teach the true doctrine, which was delivered by Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior,15 and which has been mistranslated, watered down, perverted,16 used as the subject of simony,17 and weaponized to be used as a justification to kill, steal, and destroy throughout the ages.18
5.I correct false doctrine wherever it is found, in season and out of season,19 and have allegiance solely to Jesus Christ, the King of Kings.20
6.I identify false prophets, false apostles, and false teachers,21 and I confront their false teachings, rebuking them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith.22
7.As a bishop and Scribe of the Kingdom, I use the Word of God to pull down the strongholds of the enemy,23 some of which masquerade as the works of an angel of light,24 misleading many.25
8.I spread the Word of God to all nations, as intended by the express command of our Lord Jesus.26
9.I serve no denomination and advocate for none; I serve the one Church of Jesus Christ with the teachings originally given,27 accepting those teachings and traditions that are in conformity with His Word,28 and rejecting man-made doctrines as being the doctrines of demons.29
10.I call for and work for Christian unity among the Body of Christ,30 that we may withstand the terrible tribulation that is to come31 in the days of the ten kingdoms32 and the reign of the Antichrist.33
11.I preach no new gospel unto you, remembering fully the words of Paul: “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”34
12.I speak to the nations as a bishop consecrated to the service of Christ,35 respecting no denominational boundaries, as those did not exist in the time of Christ,36 and have been created for the orderly administration of the Church.37 As I hold the Office of Bishop, and am a member of no denomination, I default to the original commission of Christ, which is to evangelize the nations,38 that all may come to the knowledge of the truth, and that the truth may set them free.39

7Daniel 2:41–44 (KJV) “And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.” Daniel 7:7 (KJV) “After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.” Daniel 7:20 (KJV) “And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows.” Daniel 7:24 (KJV) “And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise…” Revelation 12:3 (KJV) “And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.” Revelation 13:1 (KJV) “And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.” Revelation 17:3 (KJV) “So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.” Revelation 17:7 (KJV) “And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? 111 Timothy 3:1 (KJV) “This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.” 1 Timothy 3:2–7 (KJV) “A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.” Titus 1:7–9 (KJV) “For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.” Acts 20:28 (KJV) “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.” Philippians 1:1 (KJV) “Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:” 1 Peter 5:1–4 (KJV) “The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.” Ignatius, Ephesians 6 (ANF 1): “we should look upon the bishop even as we would upon the Lord Himself.” Magnesians 6: “your bishop presides in the place of God, and your presbyters in the place of the assembly of the apostles.” Trallians 3: “In like manner, let all reverence the deacons as an appointment of Jesus Christ, and the bishop as Jesus Christ, who is the Son of the Father, and the presbyters as the sanhedrim of God, and assembly of the apostles. Apart from these, there is no Church.” Smyrnaeans 8: “Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude [of the people] also be; even as, wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.” ↩︎
12Matthew 13:52 (KJV) “Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.” Matthew 23:34 (KJV) “Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes…” Ezra 7:6 (KJV) “This Ezra went up from Babylon; and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses, which the LORD God of Israel had given: and the king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him.” Ezra 7:10 (KJV) “For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.” Habakkuk 2:2 (KJV) “And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.” Jeremiah 30:2 (KJV) “Thus speaketh the LORD God of Israel, saying, Write thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee in a book.” Revelation 1:11 (KJV) “Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.” Revelation 1:19 (KJV) “Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;” ↩︎
13Ephesians 4:11 (KJV) “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;” Romans 12:4–8 (KJV) “For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.” 1 Corinthians 12:4–11 (KJV) “Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.” 1 Corinthians 12:28–29 (KJV) “And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?” 1 Corinthians 7:7 (KJV) “For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.” 1 Peter 4:10–11 (KJV) “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.” 1 Clement 41 (ANF 1): “Let every one of you, brethren, give thanks to God in his own order … not going beyond the rule of the ministry prescribed to him.” Didache 15.1 (ANF 7): “Appoint, therefore, for yourselves, bishops and deacons worthy of the Lord, men meek, and not lovers of money, and truthful and proved; for they also render to you the service of prophets and teachers.” ↩︎
14Matthew 16:18–19 (KJV) “…And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Matthew 18:18 (KJV) “Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” John 20:21–23 (KJV) “Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.” Isaiah 22:22 (KJV) “And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.” Revelation 1:18 (KJV) “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” Revelation 3:7 (KJV) “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;” Successors: Acts 1:20–26 (KJV) “For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take. Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection. And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.” 2 Timothy 2:2 (KJV) “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” Titus 1:5 (KJV) “For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:” Origen, Commentary on Matthew XII.10–11, 14 (ANF 9): “Are the keys of the kingdom of heaven given by the Lord to Peter only, and will no other of the blessed receive them?” and “let us see in what sense it is said to Peter, and to every Peter, ‘I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven.’” Cyprian, On the Unity of the Church 4–5 (ANF 5): “to all the apostles, after His resurrection, He gives an equal power”; “The episcopate is one, each part of which is held by each one for the whole.” ↩︎

They say still unto them that despise me, The LORD hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you. For who hath stood in the counsel of the LORD, and hath perceived and heard his word? who hath marked his word, and heard it? Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked. The anger of the LORD shall not return, until he have executed, and till he have performed the thoughts of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly. I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. Am I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off? Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD. I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed. How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart; Which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal. The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the LORD. Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that steal my words every one from his neighbour. Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that use their tongues, and say, He saith. Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD.” Ezekiel 13:1–9 (KJV) “And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel that prophesy, and say thou unto them that prophesy out of their own hearts, Hear ye the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing! O Israel, thy prophets are like the foxes in the deserts. Ye have not gone up into the gaps, neither made up the hedge for the house of Israel to stand in the battle in the day of the LORD. They have seen vanity and lying divination, saying, The LORD saith: and the LORD hath not sent them: and they have made others to hope that they would confirm the word. Have ye not seen a vain vision, and have ye not spoken a lying divination, whereas ye say, The LORD saith it; albeit I have not spoken? Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye have spoken vanity, and seen lies, therefore, behold, I am against you, saith the Lord GOD. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.” Psalm 133:1 (KJV) “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” 1 Clement 46 (ANF 1): “Why are there strifes, and tumults, and divisions, and schisms, and wars among you?” Ignatius, Ephesians 4–5: “It is profitable, therefore, that you should live in an unblameable unity, that thus ye may always enjoy communion with God. … how much more do I reckon you happy who are so joined to him as the Church is to Jesus Christ, and as Jesus Christ is to the Father, that so all things may agree in unity!”; Philadelphians 3: “If any man follows him that makes a schism in the Church, he shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” Cyprian, On the Unity of the Church 5–6: “And this unity we ought firmly to hold and assert, especially those of us that are bishops who preside in the Church, that we may also prove the episcopate itself to be one and undivided. … He can no longer have God for his Father, who has not the Church for his mother.” ↩︎

And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect’s sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.” Daniel 12:1 (KJV) “And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.” Daniel 7:21–25 (KJV) “I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them; Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom. Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces. And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings. And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” Revelation 7:14 (KJV) “And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.” Revelation 13:7 (KJV) “And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them…” Didache 16 (ANF 7): “Watch for your life’s sake … be ye ready, for ye know not the hour in which our Lord cometh.” Epistle of Barnabas 4: “The final stumbling-block (or source of danger) approaches, concerning which it is written, as Enoch says…”; Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lecture 15: “Who then is the blessed man, that shall at that time devoutly witness for Christ? … For the Martyrs hitherto have wrestled with men only; but in the time of Antichrist they shall do battle with Satan in his own person.” ↩︎

331 John 2:18 (KJV) “Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists…” 1 John 2:22 (KJV) “Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.” 1 John 4:3 (KJV) “And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.” 2 John 7 (KJV) “For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.” 2 Thessalonians 2:3–10 (KJV) “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.” Revelation 13:1–8 (KJV) “And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” Revelation 17:12–14 (KJV) “And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.” Daniel 7:8 (KJV) “I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.” Daniel 7:25 (KJV) “And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” Irenaeus, Against Heresies V.25.1 (ANF 1): Antichrist, “being an apostate and a robber, is anxious to be adored as God”; V.30.2–3: “…let them await, in the first place, the division of the kingdom into ten; then, in the next place, when these kings are reigning, and beginning to set their affairs in order, and advance their kingdom, [let them learn] to acknowledge that he who shall come claiming the kingdom for himself, and shall terrify those men of whom we have been speaking, having a name containing the aforesaid number, is truly the abomination of desolation. … It is therefore more certain, and less hazardous, to await the fulfilment of the prophecy, than to be making surmises, and casting about for any names that may present themselves…” Hippolytus, On Christ and Antichrist: “Now, as our Lord Jesus Christ, who is also God, was prophesied of under the figure of a lion, on account of His royalty and glory, in the same way have the Scriptures also aforetime spoken of Antichrist as a lion.” Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lecture 15.12 (NPNF2 7): “There shall rise up together ten kings of the Romans … and after these an eleventh, the Antichrist.” ↩︎
34Galatians 1:6–9 (KJV) “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” Jude 3 (KJV) “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” Deuteronomy 4:2 (KJV) “Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.” Deuteronomy 12:32 (KJV) “What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.” Proverbs 30:6 (KJV) “Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.” Revelation 22:18–19 (KJV) “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” Irenaeus, Against Heresies I.10.1–2: “As I have already observed, the Church, having received this preaching and this faith, although scattered throughout the whole world, yet, as if occupying but one house, carefully preserves it. … For, although the languages of the world are dissimilar, yet the import of the tradition is one and the same.” III.1.1: “We have learned from none others the plan of our salvation, than from those through whom the Gospel has come down to us…” Tertullian, Prescription against Heretics 21 (ANF 3): “all doctrine which agrees with the apostolic churches—those moulds and original sources of the faith must be reckoned for truth…” Polycarp, Philippians 7: “Wherefore, forsaking the vanity of many, and their false doctrines, let us return to the word which has been handed down to us from the beginning…” Vincent of Lérins, Commonitorium 8–9 (NPNF2 11), on Galatians 1:8: “…the apostle putting in exercise the authority of his office, delivered his sentence with the utmost severity, ‘Though we,’ he says, ‘or an angel from heaven, preach any other Gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.’ … To preach any doctrine therefore to Catholic Christians other than what they have received never was lawful, never is lawful, never will be lawful: and to anathematize those who preach anything other than what has once been received, always was a duty, always is a duty, always will be a duty.” ↩︎

For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.” John 10:16 (KJV) “And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.” Ephesians 2:14–19 (KJV) “For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;” Ephesians 4:4–6 (KJV) “There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” Galatians 3:28 (KJV) “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” Colossians 3:11 (KJV) “Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.” 1 Clement 47 (ANF 1): “he wrote to you concerning himself, and Cephas, and Apollos, because even then parties had been formed among you.” Ignatius, Philadelphians 3: “For as many as are of God and of Jesus Christ are also with the bishop.” Tertullian, Prescription against Heretics 20 (ANF 3): “the churches, although they are so many and so great, comprise but the one primitive church, (founded) by the apostles, from which they all (spring).” ↩︎

Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.” Titus 1:5 (KJV) “For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:” 1 Clement 40 (ANF 1): “not thoughtlessly or irregularly, but at the appointed times and hours.” ↩︎
